Dear friends in Cambridge,
I finally find the time to write to you guys. Till is sleeping, the girls have a sleep over with our neighbor girl in the house and Elias is at a meeting of our house community.
We’re all fine and doing well. And we have very full and wonderful weeks behind us. Our old / new life feels very appropriate and moved again. Like an old shoe…it fits well, but at some point it needs a little change.

Kindergarten and school started this week – everything seems to be normal in Germany. I’m looking forward for a little free time! The children actually too. We have had such intense and wonderful family months, but now it’s time for everyone to do their own thing again. It is especially important for the girls. They’re arguing often at the moment … Nora is copying a lot from Fritzi (wants to wear the same dress, to eat the same type of ice cream …) and Fritzi is annoyed by that. It is good when both can go their own way again.
Till – the little mama glue – also started Monday in preschool. I’m sure he’ll find it good, even if it’s a big step for him: from 7 days, 24 hours mom, to preschool (6h). Oh, if it were the Cambridge Nursery School (CNS) I would let go him a lot easier!

Elias will start his new job in September and I start working again at the hospital/delivery room in October. How we then juggle the shift work is still a mystery to me … but so far it has always worked out and I am so happy to be a midwife and like to work again.
What happened since our good bye in Cambridge? We spend the whole June at the ocean. Four great weeks near Plymouth with sea view: We slept on the large veranda under the stars-filled sky. Wonderful. Living together with the other family in the house was nice, but also exhausting. Family structures are simply very different and it takes a lot of patience, humor and agreements to arrange two systems. Not always easy. But also human and therefore exciting. And the six kids had a great time and so did we!

We flew back on July 1st. We were rebooked via Washington and Frankfurt to Munich and spent two weeks there at my mother’s place (with a garden!). Flying with three small children is not a great joy … while one is sitting on your lap, helping the second child to open the meal, while the third child is spilling the juice … lovely.
But we caught all of the connecting flights. The kids were (of course) absolutely overtired. But they did a great job. They ran around and were more happy, excited and nervous than complaining and grumpy …
Hardly in Germany social distance somehow has been lost. The plane from Frankfurt to Munich was already fully booked and there were no distance rules. The queues at customs were also tight and without the usual distance of six feet. Since then we have been amazed every day at the free and supposedly normal life here in Germany.
People wear masks in public transport and in all shops. Many are still working from at home, but schools and kindergartens have been open again for two months now. Some of the schools still had restrictions in June and July (divided classes and alternating lessons). Now – after the summer break- everything open as before -in the time before Corona(do you remember this?). The children only wear masks on the way to the classroom and sit there separately from each other. Of course, larger events are canceled, but the normal citylife seem to be actually unchanged.
Swimming pools are open, the zoo and also the theater … tickets are sold everywhere in reduced numbers and online, but real distance rules are not followed everywhere.
People discuss this very differently. Many fear the second wave and yet almost everyone is relieved by the social contacts, the freedom and quality of life that we are currently experiencing … But of course many are also concerned about the negligence and the underestimated danger.
I still feel a bit like an observer and cannot quite cope with my feelings (how is life in Germany? What is allowed to do? How do you protect yourself?)

But I also enjoy our social life and all the nice encounters with friends and acquaintances. I cant cross one street in the hood without meeting familiar faces and have some small talk. Our housing project welcomed us so lovely with cakes, bread, pictures and fruits … there were flowers on every floor of the stairs (we live on the 4th floor!) … Now we are enjoying the great nice community. 12 children between 0-7 years in our house! The yard is a small playground.
Just arrived in Germany we spent the first two weeks with my mom in Munich. As soon as the children saw my mother, she was besieged and I was written off. Splendid. Vacation!!! We had two very nice weeks in Munich. We all had bicycles and could swim in the mountain lakes and rivers. According to the German regulations, we did not have to keep a quarantine (the individual American states are considered separately in the risk assessment and Massachusetts was low risk … how good that we had such good numbers and strict lockdown regulations). We enjoyed my mom’s summer garden and of course the whole grandma’s pampering program … delicious food and lots of ice cream!
my family in Munich:

We left Fritzi and Nora for three days in Munich with my mom and traveled back to Wiesbaden with all our stuff in an old and noisy VW Bus. Just arrived, we painted two rooms new, cleaned the whole flat (it was rented out for one year…and foreign dirt feels different to the own!) and changed the furniture in some rooms…now all three kids sleep in one childrens room. oh my god…we have too much stuff. There were countless boxes at the basement! But we were good, motivated and structured and when the girls arrived with my mom (in train) the flat was ready and beautiful. I like our place al lot…but I miss the yard and the birds… here we have a noisy and stinky bus in our street…every 7 minutes…and so many people smoke…I never realized that before.
Cambridge is so green and there is so much space!!! I just learned that our neighborhood has the highest population density of all German cities.…no wonder why I sometimes get claustrophobia.
Renovation, our flat and fritzis birthday with our best friends:

I still rave about our live in Cambridge. Especially about preschool and school. How transparent and digital information flows run and how closely we felt connected to the institutions. We were part of the community. The German systems feel cold and do not manage to create such a feeling … I miss the American positive spirit! Together we can do it.
Oh friends we talk so much about all of you! We miss you! And I hope the time of free travel will come and you could come to visit us! (Yes there is space for you 😉! )
I hope you know, you have friends at the other side oft the Atlantic ocean…thinking of you and missing you!
Hope you are doing well! How is your life going on?
I send you the best wishes from all five of us!
